Now I am not claiming to be a doctor, however, these are some simple steps that everyone should know. You could save a life.

When I eat wheat and gluten I can go into anaphylactic shock. This is an extreme and potentially life threatening allergic reaction. Symptoms of which can cover: hives, puffiness, trouble breathing, fast heartbeat, clammy skin, confusion, tiredness, shaking, fainting, feeling or being sick, swelling and stomach pain.

Steps to follow:

  1. Call 999 immediately and state that you think the person is suffering from anaphylaxis.

  2. Remove the trigger – if possible. For example, if there is food beside them remove this. If there is a bee sting in them remove this, where possible.

  3. Calm the person down where possible – an allergic reaction can be very scary.

  4. Use their adrenaline injector or epi-pen on them. I usually keep mine in my handbag – look for a bag they may have with them.

  5. Please see the “How to use the Epi-Pen” – each epi- pen can only be used once. If you have had to use this, make sure you inform the ambulance/hospital. link: http://www.epipen.co.uk/patients/epipenr-user-guide

If you have an allergy:

  1. Always carry 2 epi-pens and your prescribed antihistamines.

  2. Teach friends and loved ones how to use this.

  3. Inform everyone where you usually carry your epi-pen.

  4. Wear a bracelet, necklace or something to tell people about your allergy. You can buy them online – I have a bracelet with an “allergic to wheat” charm.
