What a fantastic cosy venue for a Sunday lunch…I know what you are thinking, I am bonkers for choosing to have a Sunday roast on a day like today but it was so so worth it and surprisingly light! Right now…I’m thinking same time next week!
Locally sourced meats, fish and vegetables: sustainable and free range served in a quirky gastro pub tucked behind Exeter City Centre…what’s not to love?
I have often been into Oddfellows for drinks and loved the modern-vintage vibe of the pub, gigs and quizzes.
We had a lovely window seat amongst plants and pictures. Settled down with a wine, it was time to make my choice. For me, it was lamb and my partner chose beef but there was so much choice – and everything could be adapted to be gluten free!! Music to my ears!!
The portion size was amazing – plenty of everything and it is safe to say I was stuffed to the brim. My lamb was tender and fresh – cooked to perfection without the grizzly fat bits you often see. The potatoes and vegetables complimented it perfectly alongside the gravy and the crispy potatoes, however the highlight for me was the massive gluten free Yorkshire pudding (soooooo good) and the beetroot- which was divine, almost melting into the gravy as you ate it. Big thumbs up!
A Sunday roast is usually a big no no for me on a menu. So many restaurants will coat their potatoes, add flour to their gravy and don’t even offer gluten free Yorkshires! I was so shocked to be told that everything could be adapted for me – like I was no problem at all.
My partner described his beef as juicy and melting-in-his-mouth and he loved his Yorkshire pudding – he opted for gluten free too! His favourite thing on the heaped plate was the fluffy crispy potatoes – big fan!
Thoroughly stuffed, we decided we couldn’t squeeze in a desert but decided to enjoy a coffee in their courtyard in the beautiful sun. As an Italian who loves her espresso – I was impressed and it was a great opportunity to soak in the atmosphere of the pub.
We will definitely be returning for Sunday lunch again….and maybe Monday lunch and maybe Tuesday lunch and….
