Fish and chips are one of my fave dishes ever (I am half English don’t forget) and when “On Alphington Road” asked me to pop along and review their gluten free Wednesdays I jumped at the chance.
There aren’t many fish and chip shops that will cater for those of us who are gluten free and it is always so refreshing when you see it advertised.
Now this is controversial but even though I do remember “normal” fish and chips, I prefer the crispy taste of gluten free and it’s not something I’ve ever felt like I have missed the “normal” version of! I’d be interested to know what you all think? It is however, something that needs to be done well, and in my opinion “On Alphington Road” ace this!
“On Alphington Road” have been catering for gluten free for 3-4 months now and Stephen the Manager was kind enough to give me the re-assurance of showing me “behind the scenes” with how it all works! The cod is battered separately using gluten free batter, new frying oil and separate utensils. The gluten free batter is kept in a separate tub to avoid cross contamination and is made from cornflour (which I am sure gives it it’s crispy texture)! All the chips are gluten free anyway! Once your fish and chips are ready, the box is then marked up as gluten free to give you that added assurance. Handy when you are buying fish and chips for the whole family, as we were!
The staff there were so friendly and happy to help answer all my questions. The Manager Stephen, obviously took pride in his work (he was telling me how he used to be a Michelin Star Chef) and it definitely shows in the food. He told me how important he felt it was to cater for allergies (he has personal experience as someone in his family has a severe allergy) and he was aware of the procedures that needed to be changed to suit this in a fish and chip shop! Just what you want to hear when it’s your first time eating at a new place! Great attitude! We salute you. Allergies should never be a problem!
I was given a very healthy portion of fish and chips and….yes, yes I did eat it all! The cod was lovely and fresh, inside the layer of crispy gluten free batter. The chips were freshly cooked and oh so tasty! MMMMMM…..dosen’t you mouth water just looking at this:

In the midst of this “new way of living” during Covid-19 it was nice to have a treat and we enjoyed our takeaway in the garden! Thankfully it was a beautiful sunny day to match! The queue system was well thought through with collections one side and ordering the other. Judging by the queue it was starting to get very popular post 5pm and I can see why! Make sure you get in there early!
They are also starting a click and collect – which is a saviour on a busy day!
