What makes a trip to the seaside complete – fish n chips!!

I may be half Italian but I am also half English and who doesn’t love beach fish and chips! Not the sandy ones though.

I heard Rockfish was coming to Exeter – my home town! OMG gluten free fish and chips just down the road….my dress size has already gone up thinking about it. Oops. I had only received rave reviews from family and friends who had visited their sea front restaurants: Dartmouth, Exmouth, Torquay, Plymouth and Brixham.

I love fish and chips but being gluten free makes this tricky! It is extremely hard to locate somewhere that will have gluten free options available on a daily basis and not just when they clean their ovens. Rockfish provides a gluten free alternative for nearly every option on their menu, excluding pies. It was safe to say I was impressed – mmmm fish.

The Rockfish team were extremely enthusiastic talking us through the menu and the special catches of the day. The price, taste and how best to have it cooked were marked on our table cloth and I can honestly say I was bowled over by the choice I had. How cool is that that they draw fishes on your tablecloth?! I think it’s safe to say they put their heart and sole into it. Wayyyy.

For starters:

We were recommended the lazy crab to share which was both easy to eat (fantastic – as I really need to work on eating shellfish without getting it everywhere…classy) and absolutely incredible. It was served with a gluten free roll on side too! The white meat was my favourite and the cucumber really complimented the dish. It’s safe to say that this one was demolished.

If this slideshow of foods dosen’t make your mouth water then I don’t know what will!

For mains:

I chose the local hake battered with chips. The hake was juicy and very melt in your mouth. I also enjoyed how it was battered in the skin – this was a great touch and added to the flavour of the dish. I love the skin on fish…that may be slightly weird I know but it’s packed with omega 3 #justsaying. The chips were amazing – fluffy inside, crispy outside and even better, bottomless! As a side, we were recommended the Caesar slaw with parmesan atop. I was a bit sceptical about parmesan with slaw but I don’t think I will ever want to eat it any other way and it really complimented the dish.

My boyfriend chose the local monkfish grilled with chips. He described it as “a really delicious flavour that was mild and creamy. It had a meaty texture, and was filling alongside the double portion of chips I had (I don’t blame him – I may have teased him about this but they were goood) , I made an excellent choice.” The lady who served us told us a story about her friend  and how she wasn’t really a fish person but loved monkfish – so maybe if you don’t usually like fish you should mullet it over.

My favourite part of the meal experience, other than the warm toasty fires and blankets, the seafront view and the incredible food and service was the attention to my gluten and wheat allergy. The team checked everything with me and the food was served with these cute gluten free flags – which for someone with an intolerance or allergy really puts your mind at rest so you can enjoy your meal without having to worry!

Thank you Rockfish. I have your loyalty card and its safe to say you will be herring from me again 🙂 Sorry about the fish puns but I just could not resist, they are brill.
