Rome was filled with places to eat for the gluten free.
The supermarket had many foods “senza glutine.”I was surprised to see that they had a fuller selection than most English supermarkets including treats which you aren’t usually allowed (gluten free gnocchi, biscuits and top of the range pasta).
Here, however are a list of foods to avoid:
Pasta (unless specifically labelled).
Pizza (unless specifically labelled).
Breaded meats, fish and fried vegetables.
Salami, which often has wheat.
Soups.
Panettone and other breads.
Tiramisu.
Gelato (unless specifically labelled).
Risotto (ask how the stock is made).
Meatballs.
Italian ingredients to avoid: frumento, orzo, segale, farro, farine, kamut.
My favourite places to dine in Rome (I shall add more next time I visit):
Rosso Pomodoro – fantastic napoli style pizzas with an optional gluten free base.
Mama Eat – http://www.mamaeat.com/english/ – amazing gluten free menu. The gluten free pizza came out on a different colour dish to make sure it was separate.
